Holy shit. This guy earned the Medal of Honor TWICE. Both of them before WWll. He got the first one as a private during the Boxer rebellion and his 2nd one 15 years later as a Gunny in Haiti.
He was up for a THIRD Medal of Honor, but it was "downgraded" to the Navy Cross, the 3rd highest award that a jarhead can receive. The 1st being the medal of honor and the 2nd being the coveted "Nympho Girlfriend who's dad owns a Liquor store."
The downgraded Medal of Honor was where this post's quote comes from:
"However Daly was not finished yet, there was yet the incident for which he is perhaps best remembered in the Marines for.
In June 1918 at the battle of Belleau Wood in World War I the Marines were pinned down under heavy artillery barrage and pinned down.
At one point the now 44 year old Daly, led a counter-attack with a battle cry that has become Marines lore “Come on, you sons of B——, do you want to live forever?!” Later in the battle, Daly single handedly eliminated a machine gun nest with nothing more than his 45 pistol and grenades. In the course of the battle he was wounded three times."
The guy was 44 years old ! Thanks,op. Cool rabbit hole.
Did a report on him, certified bad ass. Helped start the origin story of the Teufel Hunden, which became a huge recruitment tool.
While the term Teufel Hunden was in print before the Battle of Belleau Wood, most stories about how the name came to be seem to originate with Daly and his bayonet charge. To this day marines are still called devil dogs.
